Love turns me into Nothing Special

If your heart is even just a little open, you may well have a special place for Ram Dass…if not, you don’t know what you’re missing. Ram Dass (or Richard Alpert) was one of the first teachers that truly resonated with me back in 2011…just beginning the inner journey. I devoured his words for hundreds of hours.

If familiar, You may have heard of his doc / book - ‘Becoming Nobody’ …he’d often say he was ‘nobody special’ and that the true spiritual path was just that…becoming nobody.

Opposite to our western culture, which is predicated on the notion that you should become somebody, something - standout from the rest, the individual identity…the ego is celebrated.

Apart from the separation and isolation from others,
Ram Dass explained how this was the barrier to experiencing the truth of who we are.

Here’s a short poem inspired by this idea of ‘Becoming Nobody’:

Being nobody,

and not striving

to be somebody,

Love turns me

into everybody.

Being nothing,

and not struggling

to be something,

Love turns me

into everything.

Being a traveller

and not trying

to get anywhere,

Love turns my

Heart into a home.

Being simple,

and not pretending

to be clever,

Love transforms

my experiences

into wisdom.

Being humble

and not seeking

to know anything,

Love turns my

Heart into a scripture.

Being still

and not needing

to move,

Love turns my

actions into prayer.

Being silent

and not needing

to be heard,

Love turns my

words into a poem.

And so be it.x
